Buying vs Renting a Unitree Robot — Which Is Better for Business
A detailed breakdown: when it is better to buy a Unitree robot, and when to rent. Comparison across 7 criteria, typical scenarios for oil & gas, events, R&D, education, pilots. Rent-with-buyout option.

In short: rental wins for short one-off tasks — an exhibition, a presentation, a one-time inspection, a "prove the concept" pilot. Buying wins for regular use: daily rounds, an ongoing STEM education program, long R&D work, operational inspection. The break-even line is roughly 4-6 months of active use: from that point buying is economically more attractive than renting. Bonus option — rent with buyout, where payments count toward the purchase.
This article is for CFOs, finance directors, procurement leaders and pilot-project managers in Kazakhstan. It helps you pick the right model of working with a robot — without overpaying and without losing flexibility.
Comparison by criteria
| Criterion | Rent | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Term | From 1 day to 24 months | Indefinite (subject to wear) |
| Upfront cost | Minimal (deposit + first payment) | Full cost of robot + accessories |
| Flexibility | High — end at any time | Low — robot is a fixed asset |
| Maintenance | Included | Your responsibility (or service pack) |
| Trying different models | Easy — try different platforms | Hard — only what you bought |
| Accounting treatment | Expense (opex) | Fixed asset + depreciation (capex) |
| When it wins | One-offs, pilots, events | Regular use, R&D, education |
Scenarios: when to pick which
Rent — for one-off tasks
- Mall or store opening (1-3 days) — G1 humanoid with a show program.
- Exhibition / B2B conference (2-5 days) — G1 + quadruped.
- Product launch or corporate event (1 day) — G1 + operator.
- One-time site inspection (3-14 days) — B2 / A2 for a pilot round.
- Education course for a student group (1-2 months) — Go2 EDU + base program.
- Concept test "will a robot work here?" (1-3 months) — B2 or G1 in real conditions.
Buy — for regular use
- Daily walks of a refinery, oil depot, substation — B2 / A2.
- Ongoing STEM program at school or university — Go2 EDU / G1 EDU.
- Embodied AI / R&D lab — H1 / G1-D / Z1.
- Night warehouse inventory ≥ 5 times a week — B2-W.
- Continuous animation at a large mall or flagship restaurant — G1.
- Building an in-house R&D program with publications at IROS / ICRA / CoRL.
Rent with buyout
In-between option: the robot starts on rent for 6-24 months. At the end of the term the renter can return the robot, extend the rental, or buy it out — rental payments partially or fully count toward the purchase. Good for: companies with long CAPEX approval cycles; startups and grant projects; teams unsure about a specific model.
What rental usually includes
- The robot itself in the agreed configuration.
- Delivery to your site and back.
- Operator basic training (1-2 hours).
- Spare battery and charging dock.
- Remote technical support during the rental.
- Insurance against minor damage.
- For big events — Alashed engineer on site (optional).
Watch-outs
- Not every model is available for rent — flagships (H1, H2) and niche items (Dex5-1P) are usually sale-only.
- Long rentals often economically approach a purchase — for recurring tasks, run both scenarios.
- Rentals make it hard to customize the robot — bespoke scripts and SDK work usually need ownership.
- Rental does not grant the right to publish case studies or use Unitree.kz branding publicly without sign-off.

humanoid
Unitree G1
Гуманоидный AI-аватар
The most popular rental — G1 humanoid for events, presentations, malls.

quadruped
Unitree Go2
Новое существо воплощённого AI
Go2 on rent — for short STEM courses, demos, one-off inspections.

quadruped
Unitree B2
Выйди за пределы возможностей
B2 for a pilot inspection — typical 7-14 day rental to validate a scenario.
Decide in 5 minutes
- Count how often the robot will work per month.
- Less than 1-2 times — rent wins.
- More than 4-5 times — seriously consider buying.
- In between — go with rent-with-buyout.
- Unsure — start with a 1-7 day rental as a pilot, then decide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum rental period?
1 day for humanoids (G1, R1) and quadrupeds (Go2). For industrial platforms (B2, B2-W, A2) usually from 3-7 days — to allow route prep and on-site integration.
Can I rent for a year?
Yes. Rental from 6 to 24 months is a standard option for pilots and long R&D. A buyout option is usually attached in this range.
What about VAT and closing documents?
Alashed operates as a Kazakhstan legal entity, issues invoices, completion acts, contracts. VAT is handled per Kazakhstan rules. Suitable for state and corporate clients.
Who is responsible for damage during rental?
Basic minor-damage insurance is included. Serious damage by the renter (drops, water ingress in non-rated config, vehicle accidents) is on the renter per the contract. All terms are fixed in the agreement.
When is rent-with-buyout better than a normal purchase?
When you want to minimize upfront cost or spread payments. Total amount is close to a normal purchase but gives you an out during the rental term.
Can I rent in Astana or Shymkent?
Yes. The base depot is in Almaty, but Alashed organizes delivery across Kazakhstan and the CIS. For frequently rented platforms (G1, Go2) we can keep a robot on a service site in Astana by arrangement.
