Case: STEM Lab with Unitree Go2 EDU at a Kazakhstan School

A real case of deploying Unitree Go2 EDU as the core of a STEM lab at a Kazakhstan secondary school: task, platform choice, curriculum, hardware, teacher training and early results.

In short: a secondary school in Kazakhstan launched a STEM lab built around Unitree Go2 EDU for grades 8-11. The curriculum covers Python, ROS2, LiDAR navigation, and embodied AI basics. In year one — 60+ students completed the base course, 12 went on to technical universities in AI and robotics. The project budget paid off through retaining strong students and attracting new families to the school.

This article is for school principals, methodologists, parent committees, private education operators. It shows a realistic path from "idea" to working lab in a single academic year.

The task

The school wanted a STEM program that goes beyond "blocks and LEGO Mindstorms". Goals: 1) give students access to real professional robotics; 2) prepare graduates for AI / robotics university tracks; 3) make the school visible in the private education market.

Why Unitree Go2 EDU

  • Open SDK in Python and ROS2 — industry standard, skills transfer to real jobs.
  • Built-in 4D LiDAR L1 — students work with real SLAM, not simulation.
  • Ready methodology from Alashed — no need to invent the course from scratch.
  • Safety for teenagers — Go2 is designed to work near people.
  • Imported but accessible — positions the school as a "tech flagship".
  • Local service support in Almaty — maintenance and repair don't go to China.

Yearly curriculum

  1. Sep-Oct: intro to robotics + Python for robots (10 lessons).
  2. Nov-Dec: ROS2 basics — nodes, topics, services (8 lessons).
  3. Jan-Feb: LiDAR and SLAM — classroom map building, waypoint navigation (8 lessons).
  4. Mar-Apr: team projects — each group of 3-4 students solves its own task (10 lessons).
  5. May: final demo for parents + hackathon.
  6. Summer: summer school for the most interested (deep dive into Isaac Sim and AI).

Teacher training

Teacher baseline training — a 5-day intensive in Almaty or remote. Topics: SDK, typical scenarios, safety, methodology. Then teachers build lessons themselves for the school profile. Alashed provides consulting support in year one.

Year-one results

  • 60+ students in grades 8-11 completed the course.
  • 12 graduates from grade 11 enrolled in AI / robotics tracks (including KazNU, Astana IT University, foreign universities).
  • 3 teams won regional hackathons.
  • +25% admissions to new grade 8 classes ("we picked this school for robotics" — a common parent line).
  • The school took the "tech flagship" position among private schools in Almaty.

What to improve in year two

  • Add a second robot type — G1 for a humanoid course for top students.
  • Launch a teacher program for other Kazakhstan schools as a paid course.
  • Open a club for lower grades (5-7) with basic scenarios.
  • Engage parents: a quarterly "evening with the robot".

FAQ

What's the starting budget?

Baseline kit (2 robots + batteries + training stand + laptops) — usually a one-time budget the school recoups in 1-2 years through new admissions. Alashed prepares an exact figure for your school.

What grade level can start?

Baseline from grade 7-8 (with basic Python). For younger — simplified scenarios via visual programming (Blockly-style environments).

Do I need an in-house teacher or can I hire one?

Best option — train your own CS teacher. Alashed provides methodology and support. Alternative — bring in an instructor from Astana IT University or KazNU as a curator.

What about safety?

Go2 is designed to work near people. Standard policy: 1-2 robots on the floor at once, others on the training stand. The teacher is always in view.

Can I get a lab grant?

Yes. Ministry of Education programs, Nazarbayev Foundation, corporate programs (Kaspi.kz, Beeline, etc.) regularly support STEM initiatives. Alashed helps with the application narrative.
